posted on November 22, 2015 Every so often, I will pick up a book that illuminates my own experiences, opens my eyes to the truth behind those events, and often helps me put a name to whatever I have been muddling through on my own. Oklahoma City educator John Thompson has written one such book. Prior to downloading the Kindle version of A Teacher’ s Tale: Learning, Loving, and Listening To Our Kids on a Saturday evening, I’d followed Mr. Thompson’s writings in the Huffington Post, Scholastic Administrator, and Diane Ravitch’s blog. I had an opportunity to meet him at a workshop or event once, and we follow each other on Twitter. All that said, I had not really had a chance to delve into his teaching philosophy until a review of his new book showed up on my Facebook news feed. The review including the following snippet from his book: I was never a hat-snatcher. I did not believe in grabbing students’ contraband, whether it was hats, cell phones, marijuana, or gambling proceeds. So how did I find myself firmly holding half of a gang leader’s hat, ignoring the teenager’s threatening look? I have been in the same boat a few times. I do not consider myself authoritarian, but yet I’ve had to take on that role in my classroom in order to maintain a semblance of order. My vision of teaching includes constructivist, project-based learning in which the students revel in the process of creating authentic learning artifacts, discovering truths about themselves and others, and mastering the skills they need to be effective communicators in our ever-changing world. Yet, I have had to take on a role of disciplinarian that I’m most uncomfortable with, particularly when students (and sometimes their parents) don’t appreciate that I’m trying to help them become the people they are capable of being, to reach the dreams they tell me about in their first-week-of-school writing exercises. This has been true whether I’ve taught in a rural high school with a 35  percent poverty rate (based on free/reduced lunch eligibility), a racially diverse suburban middle  school with a 85 percent  poverty rate, a rural middle school with a 74 percent poverty rate, or a rural high school with a 64 percent poverty rate. Over the years, I’ve struggled with the  pedagogical dichotomy  between the supportive teaching philosophy I aspire to, and the realities of managing 25 to 30 teenagers in a classroom during 7th hour. My ideas have worked in some schools, where principals and colleagues have supported  and advised me — and placed the onus for misbehavior where it belongs: with the student. Those same principles backfired in a school where administration gave me a very clear zero-tolerance-for-classroom-disruption disciplinary process, but then criticized me at the end of the year for using the process too frequently. John Thompson expressed my dilemma eloquently: Certainly, all children must be allowed the freedom necessary to explore their deepest moral and emotional selves, but adults are responsible for assuring the safety that the journey requires. Protecting all children, even from their peers, I concluded, was a prime prerequisite for their learning. It is not easy to acknowledge the depth of so many children’s suffering, especially when it requires adults to set aside their most idealistic preferences in order to maintain control of learning environments, but that is the price of admission for the opportunity to truly help children in need. Mr. Thompson calls this hybrid pedagogical philosophy â€Å"authoritative-supportive† and states that he bases his nomenclature on the research of Chicago education researcher, professor, and author, Dr. Charles M. Payne, who wrote: †¦an authoritative-supportive teaching model that includes a â€Å"high level of intellectual/academic demand,† a â€Å"high level of social demand,† and a â€Å"holistic concern for children,† and a â€Å"strong sense of teacher efficacy and legitimacy† could best prepare students academically and develop them socially, according to an article in the Spring 2013 issue of American Educator, written by Jennifer Dubin. This teaching style is the opposite of another one he described, in which the teacher â€Å"holds recess† instead of attempting to provide instruction to anarchistic students who would rather socialize. I have witnessed such pedagogical defeat in classrooms of veteran teachers and new teachers alike, including a new teacher who seemed lost in a sea of social middle schoolers (I could frequently hear his students through the cinder block wall separating our classrooms), and an overworked veteran who dealt with resistent students by letting them do whatever they wanted, as long as they didn’t disrupt the class. While Mr. Thompson’s teaching experiences transpired in high poverty urban schools, I believe his lessons can be taken to virtually any classroom in Oklahoma. One common theme I have seen  through all my years of teaching, and at the various schools where I’ve taught, is that a growing number of students are coming from high-stress, traumatic  backgrounds, and who require social-emotional remediation in order to be successful in the classroom — and ultimately in life. Usually book reviewers wait until they’ve finished reading the material before they write a review — but the epiphany I had, and my excitement over having a name for my teaching style (which legitimizes what I’m trying to do) — led  me to write now, even though I’ve only read 11 percent of the book. Back to reading†¦ Michelle WatersI am a secondary English Language Arts teacher, a University of Oklahoma student working on my Master’s of Education in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum with an concentration in English Education, and a NBPTS candidate. He once said, â€Å"Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.† He definitely lived by this rule, as he worked hard to improve America, making many improvements, such as the Monroe Doctrine, settling border disputes, and improving foreign relations. While this was hard due to John Adam’s absence, Abigail used letters from their f ather to teach her children good morals. Every Adam’s child looked up to their father, especially John Adams. Because his father was his role model, John Quincy picked up many of his traits. These included determination, a fierce independence, and stubbornness. This was also due to his parents’ strict and proper parenting values. They made John Quincy into a very virtuous and moral person and such a young age. While his father was gone, he took it upon himself to be the man of the house, taking it in his hands to protect his family and help his mother with his siblings even though he was around the age of 10. â€Å"(He felt) responsible—as the eldest son—for protecting his mother while his father attended to the business of revolution† (John Quincy Adams: Life Before the Presidency). The approval by the authorities in the United States to build an Islamic cultural center at a location near the spot of the September the eleventh attacks in America resulted in a controversy that touched on the basic rights of Americans protected by the first amendment of the American constitution. The Commission for Landmark Preservation in New York approved the construction of the Islamic center just two blocks away from the site of the World Trade Center because the two buildings torn apart to give way for the construction of the Islamic center were not very distinctive landmarks in Manhattan (Aljazeera). Three years after the attack on Fort Sumter, one of the most controversial battles of the American Civil War was fought in West Tennessee. The garrison was comprised of 557 men total, about half of those men were African American s in the 6th U.S. Regiment Colored Heavy Artillery, and the 2nd Colored Light Artillery, commanded by Major Lionel F. On June 6, 1861, Union forces took control of the fort, but were ordered to leave the fort six months later by Union General William T. Sherman. Commanding officer Major General Stephen A. Hurlburt originally followed Sherman s, and order his troops to discard the strong hold. The Effects Of Homework On Elementary School - 895 Words

The subject of homework assigned in elementary school has been a controversial topic discussed for decades. Individuals question if homework assigned in elementary school has a true purpose, such as academic improvements for students. Some people may argue that homework aids elementary students in learning and enables them to grow intellectually. Whereas, others may say homework only adds stress and creates problems for children at such a young age. In 1998, Americans became a step closer to comprehending what side of this argument was most accurate. In the book, â€Å"The Battle Over Homework,† famous psychologist Harris Cooper explains his experiments and research he used to come to an eye-opening conclusion for individuals nationwide. Cooper’s research showed, â€Å"Homework accounted for less than four percent of the differences in students’ scores,† (alfiekohn.org) which supports the argument that homework does not make a significant difference in a s tudent’s grades or test scores. Having the responsibility of homework in the midst of youth does not benefit anybody, such as students, parents, or teachers to a certain extent. Practice Critique HealthCare

Question: Discuss about the Practice Critique HealthCare. Answer: Introduction HealthCare is a dynamic sector. It is prone to lots of changes and challenges that need to be constantly addressed. This proves that health care is a true reflection of the society which is not static, but prone to lots of changes. When an individual makes a choice to join the healthcare profession, one expects to enjoy the benefits of it offers. However, this does not usually happen because of one or more challenges experienced by practitioners. This paper presents a candid and critical analysis of a reflection on high workloads; poor working environments; stress and burnouts; and poor pay and low status of the healthcare professionals. High Workloads One of the major challenges faced by the healthcare professionals is the high workloads. When one successfully completes training and gets privileged to be employed, one is expected to perform a wide range of roles. Although the roles and responsibilities performed depends on the specialty and job ranks, basically, practitioners are expected to handle patients and effectively address their needs. However, this has become a strenuous duty because many practitioners have been complaining of high workloads. A large number of employers have been overworking their staff (Eisele, Grohnert, Beausaert Segers 2013). A part from allocating them too many tasks, healthcare providers can be compelled to work for longer hours. Worse still, the practitioners can be given additional duties when called upon to attend to emergency cases. From my personal journal, I observed that the high workload of the clinical staff is a reality. On many occasions, I noted down that the healthcare providers are given so many duties to perform. For example, the nurses are expected to provide primary care services such as assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, and supervision of the patients progress. These are heavy tasks that require the nurses to be so active. The employers do not apply the principles of division of labor in the healthcare facilities (Bates, et al 2013). Although each practitioner should be assigned one single task to perform, this does not happen. Instead, practitioners are expected to be all-round professionals who can be called upon to perform different kinds of responsibilities. The other observation I made is that the healthcare providers are given a heavy workload by forcing them to work for longer hours. I was surprised to realize that the employer does not care about the welfare of the practitioners. Although the government has set standards to be followed, the employers always flout such regulations because it does not serve their interests. As a result of this, employees are instructed to report in time, stay longer at the facilities and handover their duties only after exploiting their full potential (Donato Segal 2013). Personally, I have been a victim of this practice because it has affected me several times. One day, after completing my duties, I was instructed to extend my stay at the hospital so as to replace my colleague had not reported to duty because of family commitments. Although I complied, I felt that it was an unfair thing to be done to me. Indeed, this is a valid observation because it depicts a true picture of the healthcare sector. The overloading of healthcare personnel is a persistent practice that has been in existent for quite a long time. From my experience, the practice owed its origin to a number of reasons. First, there are no enough healthcare professionals in most of the healthcare facilities. Many employees are overworked because of the understaffing of the healthcare facilities. This is exactly what is going on in my organization. Over the years, my employer has been accused of understaffing the organization (Eisele, Grohnert, Beausaert Segers 2013). There are a few personnel who cannot effectively discharge all the tasks. Besides, the practice of work overloads had been blamed on the laxity of the government and labor unions. Whereas the government has failed to come up with stringent policies, the trade unions have failed to efficiently advocate for the welfare of the healthcare personnel. Poor Work Environments The other challenge facing the healthcare personnel is poor working environments. One of the reasons why people prefer certain employers is the working environment. Ideally, a working environment should be a safe place that can appeal to and accommodate all the employees regardless of their diversities. A safe working environment is good for the employees and clients as well (Bates, et al 2013). However, many employers have not done a great job of establishing a good environment for the employees. From my daily recordings, I concluded that the issue of poor working environment is a reality in the healthcare sector. An objective observation of the organization enabled me to know how poor a workplace can be. I hold the view that my organization is has a poor working environment because it has poor infrastructure. When I looked at the buildings, I realized that they are old, dilapidated and unrepaired. The buildings do not have good windows because some of the window panes are broken. At the same time, the buildings are not properly painted as expected (Healy, Harrison Foster 2015). When it rains, the water filters on the patients and the practitioners serving them. I was surprised that my organization has got such kind of facilities. The toilets are not clean and safe for usage. Some of them are leaking and smelling. At the same time, the employees are not made comfortable because they do not have enough parking spaces. Worse still, I realized that the workplace is lacking occupational safety measures. Despite the poor state of the facilities, the management has not taken any measures to guarantee the safety of the employees in the organization. The work environment is not safe for the employees because there are so many cases of injuries suffered by the personnel and clients. This shows that the management has not come up with safety measures to protect the employees from any dangers that might be experienced in line of duty (Manzoor 2012). It means that the employer is not concerned about the welfare of the employees. Healthcare services should be offered in a safe environment. However, the presence of such facilities has made it quite difficult for the healthcare providers to effectively discharge their duties. It has demoralized the employees and made them to lose confidence in the management because of the feeling that the environment in which they operate is not conducive for them. Stress and Burnout The healthcare also faces a challenge of stress and burnout. Although it is a lucrative sector, many employees complain of high levels of stress that emanate from the tasks performed on daily basis. In the workplace, there are so many things that make employees to experience stress and burnout. For example, the amount of work done by the employees can make them to experience lots of stress. As human beings, the healthcare personnel should be provided with a good environment to operate. However, this does not always happen because many employers do not care much about the staff (Tuononen, Suominen Lammintakanen 2016). The employees can be subjected to long working hours, poor working conditions, and many other injustices that can make them to feel stressed. However, this is a bad tendency that has deprived the employees of the peace of mind that they always deserve. In my journal, I established that the employees in my organization are not protected from stress. A large number employee has been expressing their stressful experiences undergone when serving the organization. I found out that the high levels of stress amongst the employees are caused by the high workloads. The management has been piling too much pressure on the healthcare personnel to work so hard. However, the staff is not only expected to work hard, but to remain on duty for the longest time possible. After reporting for duty, the personnel are expected to remain in the office for at least 8 hours (Hayes, Douglas Bonner 2015). During this time, the employees are allocated numerous tasks that are suppose3d to be effectively attended to. For example, a single employee can be required to multitask and attend to more than one patient at ago. This is a very stannous task that causes lots of stress and fatigue to the employees. I recorded that the stressful experiences undergone by the employees is caused by the employer. The employer should be held accountable because it has failed to effectively discharge its role of safeguarding the welfare of the employees. For example, many employees feel stressed because of long working hours. This has been caused by the failure of the management to hire adequate staff for the organization. The management has been engaging in retrenchments and job cuts instead of hiring more employees to address the problem of understaffing (Shields, et al 2015). The problem of understaffing cannot be effectively resolved by employing part-time employees. Instead, the management should have enough full-time employees on whom it can rely at all times. Healthcare personnel like mental care providers should be provided with excellent working conditions so as to enable them discharge their duties stress-free. Poor and Low Status of Employees The healthcare professionals have been dealing with the problem of low and poor status in the workplace. It is disheartening for the healthcare providers to have such a feeling because it makes them to be demoralized in their career. As already hinted, health care is one of the most lucrative careers in the society. Therefore, when one makes a choice to pursue a career in health care, one looks forward to a brighter future. This implies that they should be given attractive remuneration packages, dignified, recognized by the employer, and respected by the society at large (Parker 2014). However, this does not always happen because the healthcare providers are not given the kind of treatment that they deserve. In the daily journal that I wrote throughout the semester, I discovered that the healthcare providers are actually enjoying a poor and low status in the workplace. Many at times, I recorded that the healthcare providers have been complaining of low pay. The employer has not been doing his work of providing the staff with the right amount of remuneration that they deserve. The workers have been getting low salaries, allowances, and benefits (Roslan, Manaf, Filzatun Azahadi 2014). The rates offered do not reflect the market rates because they are far much lower. When it comes to allowances, the employees do not get as much allowance as expected. Even when they are called upon to work overtime and attend to emergency cases, the personnel do not get commensurate allowances. The low status of the employees is seen in the way they are trained. If the healthcare providers were highly placed, they would be equipped with high training services to enable them acquire excellent skills to use in day-to-day operations. However, this does not happen because the employees are provided with little training that mainly covers the basic skills. Worse still; the employees are not given opportunities to advance their careers. In most cases, the employer does not promote the workers and deny them the support they need to advance their careers through further studies (OConnor, Borkowski Kemp 2015). There are no serious in-house trainings provided to the employees. In case any training is organized, it does not benefit the employees as expected because it only concentrates on basic, but not fundamental skills like leadership which can increase the chances of prosperity in the career. Conclusion In conclusion, healthcare sector is perceived to be a lucrative sector. Many people hold the view that health care is a lucrative sector, in which there are favorable working conditions, attractive remuneration packages, effective managerial system, incentives, enjoyable benefits, timely promotions, and career advancement opportunities. However, the journals proved otherwise. Many employees have found it challenging to perform their tasks. The issue of high workload, poor working environment, stresses, and low status has made life to be so difficult for the employees. All these should be addressed. References Bates, L. Blurryface by Twenty one Pilots free essay sample

Twenty One Pilots Twenty One Pilots is a, recently popularized, alternative rock group. This band brings a large fan base commonly referred to as the â€Å"Skeleton Clique† due to the lead singer (Tyler Joseph) commonly wearing clothes featuring a skeleton-bone-print. Twenty One Pilots was officially founded in 2009, via Fueled by Ramen, but Joseph has been making music for Twenty One Pilots since late 2000. Twenty One Pilots consist of two members, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dunn (on drums); this has not always been the case, as Josh Dunn took the place of the two other original members back in 2008. Twenty One Pilots has a truly unique sound, being called everything from alternative rock to â€Å"Schizophrenic Pop† because the music features everything from piano and ukulele to trumpet and electric drums. Influences like Reggae, Punk, Alternative, Indie, Electronic, and Rap are evident between the vast diversity of music Twenty One Pilots has created. We will write a custom essay sample on Blurryface by Twenty one Pilots or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When their unique sound is coupled with clever, often introspective lyrics, Twenty One Pilots creates truly fantastic art. Twenty One Pilots has released two albums officially, Vessel and Blurryface, Along with two, self-released albums: Regional at Best and Twenty One Pilots. Their two self-released albums are very different from their two, more recent albums (Blurryface and Vessel) they’re not as intense, more of an electronic sound, and vastly more â€Å"poetic.† Between the four albums there is one noticeable truth, which is that the poetry Joseph extends is highly emotional and invokes a lot of self-thought in the viewer. I’ve been a fan of ToP (Twenty One Pilots) since winter of 2012, when I heard one of their songs on a commercial, ever since then I’ve been absolutely hooked. I plan on, finally, seeing my first concert of theirs on September 20th. Luckily, I’m not alone and will be joined by my best friend who is as avid a fan as myself. Weà ¢â‚¬â„¢re looking forward to sick drum beats, lyrics that speak to us, and a large group of people there that respect the lyrics and band just as we do. The name Twenty One Pilots comes from a play entitled All My Sons by Arthur Miller, in the play a factory sends out twenty-one plane parts and kills twenty-one pilots; The name is that simple. The logo, on the other hand, is much more complex. Tyler Joseph rarely speaks on the logo, which was originally made for their song Kitchen Sink on the album Regional at Best. Tyler stated in an interview: â€Å"I feel that humans are always struggling all the time when it comes to purpose, trying to figure out what their purpose is, what purpose even is, whats the point, justifying your own existence. A lot of kids and people my age struggle with whats the point, and with the logo, what it really means is its an encouragement.† Tyler states that the logo means whatever you want it to mean, the logo has different meaning for everybody t hat sees it. For me, the logo means â€Å"Peace will win, Fear will lose† and that’s the beauty of it, it means whatever you want it to. All in all, ToP has changed my life and continues to do so every day; their fan base has grown more in the past year than in the three years I’ve known of the band. I’m so proud to have been apart of their massive growth and will always devote time to this band, whether I do so by sharing their music, buying their merchandise (and I definitely do!), or simply listening to their tunes. I’ll continue to grow as a Christian, a student, and all around a member of my society through the betterment of Twenty One Pilots.
